Steps

Stairways to Heaven

Steps must feel solid and safe.  The ideal rise is seven inches, but six-and-a-half to seven-and-a-half is acceptable. Less or more is uncomfortable and unsafe.  Risers should be uniform.  Differences in the rise are uncomfortable and, once again, unsafe.

Steps should also be beautiful.  Steps are an integral part of the garden.  Steps are the transition between elevations.

The lay of the land determines the number of steps necessary.

Steps should be comfortable to traverse.  They should never be too steep.  Switchback trails may be necessary where the land is too steep for conventional steps.  As important as all the above are,  steps should also be a beautiful addition to the garden.  They can be more uniform antique granite curbstone or more rustic mossy fieldstone, but never concrete or store bought pavers.
